ABOUT THE COLLECTION...
HUMANNESS
“Humanness” is a comprehensive collection of Phoenix's largest body of work to-date, entirely composed of self-portraits.
Self-portraiture began as a practice in unedited expression, and evolved into a therapeutic diary of existence. An act of pouring and performing her emotional state into the art; the method behind this chaos is to grab whatever medium speaks loudest, and choose a flat scrap from the pile.
Multi-media for her art means experimentation with sharpie, markers, crayons, collage, pencil, paint, pastels, and, once, grape juice. The scrap pile is composed of old shipping materials, discarded cardboard, scraps of watercolor paper, and the backs of old projects.
Sustainability is an important aspect of her art, one not explored via subject matter, but rather, actively practiced through the rebirth of these materials. We as a species are intimately connected with one another, all existing in this timeline on this planet. We have an obligation to clean up our home world, and care for one another. To find the beauty budding amongst us, and keep creating new forms.
Although this collection is visually based upon my Self, the emotions portrayed are those experienced by us all. Created with an intent to connect, to me to you to a grandeur being; to feel less alone.

Phoenix graduated from the small Liberal Arts school, Eckerd College, located in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida in May of 2020. Smack in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. She graduated with a major in Visual Arts and with all of the prerequisites to attend nursing school.
Active on her campus, Phoenix volunteered as an EMT on the collegiate EMS team, held job positions as a Tour Guide and Academic Coach, and was heavily involved in student government, finishing her senior year as Vice President of Student Engagement.
Phoenix has been taking fine art classes since she was seven years old and has a strong background in traditional pencil illustration and acrylics. It wasn't until her bachelor's degree that Phoenix began to experiment with her style and mediums and canvases in an unusual way.
With her knowledge and understanding of traditional portraiture and color theory, she is able to push the boundaries of her contemporary art: exaggerating features, utilizing patterns, and creating forced compositions.
Her largest body of work consists of hundreds of self portraits over a three year period, created as a means of expression, and morphing into a therapeutic process.
